Jewelry Making Workshop | Van Cleef and Arpels

This hands-on experience allows you to create your own piece of jewelry, guided by expert artisans. The intricate process of designing and crafting jewelry offers profound insights into the creative journey, mirroring the meticulous attention to detail required in writing.

  • You will be guided by three teachers, including a jeweler and a stone-setter.
  • You will take home as a souvenir the wax stick you will have been working on during the course.
  • You are welcomed by your teachers before the class starts: a chance to meet each other and share experiences..
  • Participate in the course "From Design to Mock-up", in order to fill out your grasp of the jewelry making process.
  • After each class, teachers deliver a list of books, podcasts, websites, museums related to the course attended.

We will pick one to walk for inspiration.

In the studio, we engage in deep writing and reflection exercises, drawing parallels between the jewelery making and the writing process. The structured yet organic nature of my exercises allow for self-discovery.

The Le Dali restaurant (named for famed artist Salvador Dali) in the Le Meurice Hotel is one of my favorite destinations in Paris for lunch or breakfast.   Le Dali observes a ‘smart casual’ dress code.

330pm No better way to shake off the jetlag from a long flight than a luxurious spa visit. Walk 5 minutes, and are at the Chanel Spa at the Ritz Paris,  the city's most opulent hotel.  Coco Chanel lived in this famed 5-Star hotel for over 30 years. Aptly named, the signature massage is "Le massage de Chanel."  

6:00 We can have a alcoholic or non alcoholic drink before dinner at the Hemingway Bar

6:30pm And finish the evening with dinner at Bar Vendome in the Ritz Paris

A graduate from the École du Louvre, Paris, Géraldine Bretault is a professional lecturer and translator in the cultural field. Her lectures favor crossdisciplinarity, opening the history of art to architecture, dance, literature. Long stays abroad (in Milan and New York) allowed her to weave singular links with these cities and their culture, and to develop her appreciation of all kinds of publics.

Morning

HIGH JEWELRY MAKING AT VAN CLEEF AND ARPELS

 

9am- 11am GMT Trying Out the Jeweler's Techniques (2h)

Discover what it takes to create a High Jewelry masterpiece.

After a brief introduction, you will sit down at the traditional and authentic jeweler's workbench and you will participate in four different workshops, guided through every step by the artisans themselves. You will practice sculpting on a piece of jewelry modeling wax, you will use the jeweler's saw to make cuts into a piece of metal, you will do some polishing, and finally you will learn one of the most essential gestures to the setter by "lifting the grain" in a piece of metal.  

This course gives you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the richness of the "métiers d'art" (the artistic professions).

We wrap up three beautiful days with dinner at a restaurant that has a manifesto that there is no superficiality or artificiality when you go to the heart of a defining moment, to the table of History and all its human, universal creations.

After having reflected on your defining moments, we will enjoy a meal that honors the past while looking forward.
